Kathryn Hill

What skills will I contribute to the NCF Board?

I have over 30 years of executive leadership in non-profits and have dedicated my career to advancing social justice including in my current role as Executive Director at MediaSmarts/HabiloMédias, Canada’s Center for Digital Media Literacy. I have a deep understanding of, and am committed to, values-based and collaborative leadership. I have extensive experience in Board governance and organizational development, including managing complex systems and ensuring a diversification of revenue sources to support organizational capacity. I also bring experience advocating on public policy issues with municipal, provincial and federal governments, and have experience presenting to media, at conferences and to city councils, provincial commissions, at CRTC hearings and at federal parliamentary hearings/committees.

What are the most important functions of NCF for its members?

NCF provides accessible, community-oriented services that prioritize digital equity, education and support, ensuring that all members can be confident, connected and safe online. Bridging the digital divide is critical; but also important is having the capacity to do so as an informed digital citizen. NCF’s education mandate is especially compelling to me as I see daily the need for digital literacy education for all ages, in every community. Education has the potential to empower all of us to navigate digital spaces confidently and critically.

Why do you want to be an NCF director?

My day-to-day work places me at the forefront of digital literacy and digital skills education, focussing on the critically important role we all play as digital citizens. This includes the importance of verifying information to ensure it is real, addressing online harms, advocating for privacy rights and for the fundamental human right to digital access and education. I believe that citizens have the right to be empowered users of technology, and that digital access is essential for social inclusion, and opportunity.

I am particularly inspired by NCF’s work in underserved communities and its emphasis on transparency, member support, sustainability and online safety and education. I would be honoured to support NCF’s mission for a more connected and equitable community.
