Mitch asked Rachel if she wanted them to spend New Year's Eve together.
Scott and Cheryl heard a noise. He went out to investigate.
Flowers came for MJ. She thanked Adam but he was as surprised as she. She got upset when she saw the card. Adam: "To my best baby." Who sent you these, MJ? MJ: I told him to stay away. [This mostly to herself.] Adam: Told HIM? Who sent you these flowers?
Rachel wants to talk to Mitch about their future. He asked if they had one. He told her there was still something between them. She said she saw him in Matthew's eyes.
Scott found nothing. Cheryl suggested it could have been Vince.
MJ pulled herself together and said that Pops had sent the flowers. He used to call her his best baby, she said. She spoiled the effect rather by saying, "you believe me, don't you?" He said he thought he had a right to know if there was another guy in her life. She assured him fervently he was The Only One. He soothed her. She said she was sorry. He uttered the immortal words "you can't control who sends you flowers."
Mary went to the Love house to be nice to the shut-in before going to the party. She wished him a happy new year and left with Peter. Reginald immediately went to dress for a party (Bridget is a nitwit. Suddenly she's so … OBSEQIOUS.) Michael crept in and clamped his hand over her mouth so she wouldn't scream. He interrogated her about the stabbing. He got her to show him how far the doors had been open and made her stand in Reginald's place to see what she could see. She admitted she couldn't see anything. He assured her her nearsightedness didn't matter. Sara dropped by the pick up the baby's things. She told Michael she was going through PI school. He offered her a job in the future. Enter Nicole. Exit Sara. Nicole is nervous. She's singing tonight. She begged him to come. He caved in. She embraced him.
Mitch asked Rachel for the verdict.
Felicia was impressed with the view from Tops but she started reorganising it in her mind.
MJ deserted Adam when they arrived at Tops, ostensibly to phone Cheryl. She phoned the sugar daddy to tell him to lay off sending roses. Unluckily enough for her Scott and Cheryl arrived and chatted with Adam just then.
Peter and Michael don't get along. Mary tried to keep the peace. Suddenly Reginald appeared in the spotlight and announced that their entrance fees would be going to the poor & homeless of Bay City. [Wallingford enjoyed THAT, all right.] Reginald said that at midnight the sign on top of the building would light up the word LOVE. The building is now to be known as the Love Tower. "I think I'm going to be ill," said Michael. Mary was unthrilled.
Adam yelled at MJ a little about the phone call. Michael asked for his help.
Mary yelled at Reginald for lying to her and trying to manipulate her.
Wallingford told Felicia they should leave. She said they had to wait for Jeannie and Mitch.
Rachel told Mitch they'd always been wrong for each other. He told her she loved him and Mac represented home & family. She told him she loved Mac passionately. He said she was saying she was staying with Mac. He said he didn't like it but he understood. It wouldn't be worth it if she left Mac and the children.
Mary yelled at Peter. He took all the blame and tried to convince her to love Reginald. He begged her not to blame That Old Carrot She agreed to wish him Happy New Year (because she's as soft as Catlin and can’t bear to be unfriendly to the ex for more than ten minutes at a stretch). Peggy arrived. Peter yelled at her for having let Brittany out. She said it was out of her hands. She's there at Reginald's instigation again.
Mary tracked Reginald to the terrace. He told her those things he aways says about love. She apologised for having been nasty earlier. Cheryl observed them. Scott prevented her interfering. Reginald slobbered all over Mary and kissed her most heroically. Cheryl got angry. Mary got confused. Reginald told Mary she loved him.
Peter and Peggy have resolved to be cautious about the opposite sex.
Tony was evasive about his work when Sara spoke to him. She offered to help him get a job at Tops but he confessed he worked for Cory Publishing. He disappeared before she thought to get his last name. [This is so like The Boyfriend. Tony and Polly.]
Nicole was introduced. Nicole sang.
Rachel was surprised Mitch understood. He said he believed they [Mitch and Rachel] belonged together. She left. Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are "it might have been," eh?
Michael told Nicole she'd done well. She was a little too affectionate.
Cheryl watched Mary and Reginald.
Adam was a little mad at MJ. Finally she pulled herself together and told him she'd been ashamed to admit she'd brought her beeper. She said she'd refused to do crowd control because she wanted to spend New Years' with the man she loved. He was mollified. They love.
Mitch arrived. Felicia asked what was wrong.
Rachel arrived home. She gazed at Matthew's eyes.
The New Year came in. Cheryl decided Mary was a hypocrite.
