For three years
'Ulysses Speaks' graced the rear page of 'Canadian Research' magazine.
Canadian Research was an advertising freebie that acted as a house
magazine for the Canadian scientific research community. I was
originally asked to write a light humourous column, but given
the state of Canadian science in 1986, (and those were the
good old days) I replied I could not do it. If, however, the
editor wanted black humour and a little satire, he could back up the
truck. I quickly learned that there is no such thing a little satire.
Before writing satire the author must don war boots and
knuckledusters, and must be prepared to use them. Anyone is a
target, including the author. For a short while 'Ulysses' was an
unusual demonstration of scientific humour. Alas, despite a
couple of
very successful subscription campaigns the magazine folded in 1990
and
several Ulysses columns were stranded on the editor's desk. With just
a little editing I think some of them are still appropriate. They
can be
downloaded as Word .doc files from the links.
