Last night, I took two buses to Vanier to see and hear Albert Dumont launch his new book "Of Trees and Their Wisdom" at the Wabano Centre. http://www.albertdumont.com http://www.wabano.com I can't say that I had heard of Albert before reading the CAA (Canadian Authors Association) announcement of his book launch. It was the title that attracted my attention. I love trees, really I do :-) When time permits, I'd like to write more about this book and help promote it.
Funny thing happened while milling about after the reading... three people thought I was this "Patricia" lady who was a "friend" of Albert's and apparently we had all gone to see a movie together at the Mayfair. Good icebreaker.

The Oldest Trees on the Planet From Wired magazine March 17, 2010
"Trees are some of the longest-lived organisms on the planet. At least 50 trees have been around for more than a millenium, but there may be countless other ancient trees that haven’t been discovered yet.
Trees can live such a long time for several reasons. One secret to their longevity is their compartmentalized vascular system, which allows parts of the tree to die while other portions thrive. Many create defensive compounds to fight off deadly bacteria or parasites."

Cloned tree could prevent Dutch elm disease CBC News Last Updated: Wednesday, June 30, 2010 | 7:11 AM ET
"Fredericton has a long history of battling Dutch elm disease but an Ontario university researcher is trying to clone a disease-resistant super elm tree that could permanently save the iconic trees.
New Brunswick's capital city, which is known as the City of Stately Elms, has battled the fungus that has wiped out many trees for almost 60 years.
Praveen Saxena, a University of Guelph researcher, is part of a program that is hoping to clone a disease-resistant elm."

- - - I remember hearing about this when I was a kid. It made me sad to think that this disease was threatening to wipe out an entire species of trees.
Must remember to get in a visit to Ottawa's Central Experimental Farm Arboretum this summer - even a picnic! Remember to bring that book :-) http://www.friendsofthefarm.ca/trees.htm

Flare-up over tree accents Israel-Lebanon tension
By MARK LAVIE (AP) – 3 days ago JERUSALEM — It took no more than cutting down a tree to shatter four years of calm on the Israel-Lebanon border.

- - - I first learned about this while watching ROD episodes The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. I sadly echo his satire and disbelief. http://www.thedailyshow.com/
Sigh. Factions within factions stirring conflict within a dangerously advanced and divided species.
What an irony that earlier in the evening we watched the Nature of Things' "Uakari: Secrets of the Red Monkey" and scientists' efforts to work with locals in saving a Peruvian rain forest. http://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/natureofthings/2010/redfacedmonkey/

Neon Trees?
I caught this in a tech news feed. To quote "PopSci calls this a "triple threat," in that the trees could cut energy costs, reduce global warming and keep streets safely lit at night. "

Fire claims Ottawa Christmas tree barn
I caught wind of this on CBC.ca http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2010/12/04/ottawa-barn-fire-124.html
The story doesn't mention if or how many trees were destroyed. I feel badly for the owners. At least no humans were hurt...

Do you have childhood memories of climbing and hiding in trees, sitting on limbs to observe your yard, neighbourhood and that big, crazy world?
Allow me to lead you into a blog post that describes some characters' fondness for a cherry tree in The Year of the Rabbit - a novel about Fate, Family and Forgiveness. http://novel-yotr.blogspot.ca/2012/03/all-worlds-stage.html
I have a deep respect for trees. Trees, fruit, seeds. Birth, growth, life, death and rebirth.
