REPORT OF THE NOMINATION COMMITTEE Michael Mei, Chair March 16, 2004 The committee has fulfilled the mandate given it by the Board. We ask the Board to recommend to members the following as candidates, all of whom would be able to make a solid contribution as members of the Board of Directors. Nomination Committee Michael Mei (chair) Mary Ann Dugmore John Hennessey SHING K LEE Shing K Lee has worked in the local telecommunication industry since 1974, except for 2 years away for a teaching position in Computer Science at the University of Regina, Sask. For over 20 years, he held senior R&D management positions at Mitel, Newbridge, Cambrian Systems, Nortel and DragonWave Inc. He graduated from Carleton University with a M.Eng degree in 1974. Shing joined NCF as a member in Oct 2003, and has shown strong interest in NCF and its direction. CHRIS COPE Chris Cope is Director of SmartCapital Special Projects at the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (OCRI) where he holds the additional titles of Executive Director of EduNET and Executive Director of ORCnet. EduNET is a not-for-profit partnership of Carleton University, the University of Ottawa, La Cité collégiale and OCRI, while ORCnet is a grass-roots organization of rural champions, supported by the City to aggregate broadband demand in Ottawa's rural communities. Chris is a director of Telecommunities Canada, an organization that represents and promotes the Canadian community networking movement at the national and international level. He is on the steering committee of The Millennium Learning Centres, a community access network with 20 public sites and a Director of Volunteer Ottawa, where he chairs the Technology Committee. Cope is past Chair of the Nepean Environmental Committee, a citizen advisory committee of the former City of Nepean. Chris has been directly involved with community access since joining the National Capital FreeNet in 1995. He was employed as NCF's Executive Director from early 1997 until the end of 2000 and joined NCF's Board in the spring of 2001. He was elected as NCF's President and Chairman of the Board by his fellow Directors in April of 2001 and has continuously served in this position. Cope has been a member of both the Executive and Audit Committees since being appointed President, and in 2002 and 2003 he was NCF's AGM Chair. SANDY CAMPBELL Sandy Campbell's trade has been largely writing/editing. He has worked for daily newspapers, The Canadian Press wire service, Maclean- Hunter as Montreal Editor of a group of business magazines, Reader's Digest, Montreal, as writer/editor. Also, he was Executive Director of the Canadian Broadcasting League, Ottawa; Canadian Association of University Teachers, Ottawa, editing and conducting major overhaul of its national newspaper. Also, he was founding-President and General Manager of company publishing weekly newspaper and doing commercial printing; President/general manager of company owning an AM radio station, supervising news/public affairs and doing daily "talk" shows. While in Nova Scotia, he was on the Board of United Appeal in a Nova Scotia city and on the Board of Police Boys Club. He was a member of Nova Scotia Royal Commision on Automobile Insurance. Sandy has been an active member of NCF since 1997. Sandy has served on the NCF Board of Directors since 1999. He is long-standing Secretary of the Board and member of the Executive Committee. Sandy has twice served on an Executive Director Search Committee, perhaps the most important and demanding of the services that NCF relies upon its Board to perform. GARY EIKENBERRY Gary Eikenberry is the owner and principal consultant for GEConsult.com (Gary Eikenberry Consulting), an IT and Internet consulting firm, since 1990. Prior to that he worked primarily in the not-for-profit sector as a senior manager and adult education/professional development specialist. In additional to his consulting business, Gary holds a 4th Dan Black Belt in Taekwon-Do and is chief instructor of the HupKwonDo martial arts club (goHupKwonDo.com). Other volunteer activities include serving on the Education Committee for the Association of Professional Computer Consultants and serving as Treasurer for the Elmridge Park Tennis Club. Gary currently serves on the NCF Board of Directors (elected in 2001) and has served as First Vice President and is a member of the Executive Committee. Gary has been a member of NCF since the very early days (he holds NCF account ID "aa353"). DON FRANCIS Don Francis was for 13 years a professor in the English Department of Algonquin College, President of the Faculty Association, and Department Head of the 30-member faculty of English. He was elected to six consecutive terms as a trustee of the Ottawa Board of Education, where he was involved in dealing with curriculum initiatives, school choices, and negotiating major collective agreements. He and his wife established The Irlen Centre which has successfully helped many hundreds of people overcome reading problems. He is also a Wellness Consultant, and in 1998 graduated from the Mediation Course offered by the Faculty of Law at the University of Windsor. He has been a member of NCF from its earliest days.
