Extended Access Project

A scheme has been developed whereby FreeNet will enjoy extended access
during evening hours by utilizing the unused evening telephone capacity of
a corporate partner. During evening periods, when all lines are busy and a
user attempts to log in, rather than getting a busy signal, the call will
be forwarded to the host's telephone system. A terminal server located in
the host's premises will answer the call and back-haul the connection to
our servers via the client's Internet connection. 

Mitel Corporation had agreed in principal to allow evening use of some of
their telephone lines by NCF, Carleton University and Ottawa University.
Mitel wishes to proceed at this time with 32 lines and it now seems
appropriate for NCF to go on a stand-alone basis, rather than share the
lines with the two universities. 

The following timeline sets out the steps to bring this project to
completion and identifies the participants involved.
