Thanks to the work of Andrew Allen (ct246) of the VCTF, there exists procedures for the formal filing and resolution on complaints by volunteers. This was in response to the need for channelling issues to positive resolutions. Volunteer Recognition ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Since June, this dossier has been overseen by veteran volunteer Michael Mason, the current Volunteer Coordinator of Recognition. Michael has been using his time and energy to develop existing recognition procedures (the groundwork for which was provided by Andre Ouellette) and has some exciting plans for 3rd and 4th quarter recognition events. His efforts are sure to effective in recognizing NCF's hardworking volunteers. Photographs of this year's events have been collected and many have been posted on the bulletin board in the NCF Office (room 402, Dunton Tower). Volunteer Training ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Training for volunteers is one of the ways an organization can contribute to the development of its volunteer corps. For this reason, volunteers from NCF attended a free workshop on HTML as provided by Virtual Ventures and plans for another are currently being discussed. Certain volunteers will soon need to be very familiar with all FreePlan services (FreeMail, FreePages, etc.). Orientation sessions may soon be occuring for the Speakers Task Force, Office and HelpDesk volunteers. July 27th at Vincent Massey Park. 170 members, staff and volunteers enjoyed the good weather. Organized for the first time by NCF volunteers and staff, hot dogs and drinks were available and parachute games, relays and other activities were provided. Special thanks to Bill Lusby (at581) who drove all the way from New York to enjoy the event and give out free helpings of beans and to veteran volunteer Mark Templeton (Office & HelpDesk) for taking and donating the pictures of the event! FreePlan Meetings ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Two FreePlan meetings (Testing & Documentation on August 6th and Operations on Aug. 8th) began the deployment of new services (FreeMail, FreePages, etc.). 10 technical volunteers are in the process of testing and documenting the new services with Jessica Cohen (aa724) coordinating the documenters. Veteran volunteers from the HelpDesk, Office and Outreach (and soon other task forces) have received their first orientation to the new services. The next Technical & Documentation meeting will be on Aug. 20th. The next Operations meeting may occur in the last week of August. Recommendations ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1 - More face to face interactions between volunteers (and staff) in the form of meetings and/or social events. This will create more positive and stronger internal relationships. 2 - Further definition of the role of IP's and IM's as "volunteers" and how this is either different or similar to "regular" volunteers. It has already been recognized that IP's need increased contact with the NCF for the purposes of retension and keeping their online information current. The Outreach TF and The Training TF were to address these issues but they should have the direct support or initiative of NCF staff to ensure implementation. 3 - Training for new volunteers should formalized with specific learning objectives (ex. after 3 weeks, new volunteers should know how to use mail, file directories, etc.) with an accompanying outline. Ideally each could be given a contact (ie. Free-Net Buddy) to answer their questions. Buddies could also help establish positive social links in the volunteer corps. 4 - Training for veteran volunteers with regards to HTML, FreePages, Freemail and other services. This is particularly crucial for the NCF Office, Speakers Task Force and the HelpDesk although ideally all volunteers would benefit from such orientations/training. A well-established training program will benefit the NCF in that: - new volunteers will have the necessary skills/knowledge to be helpful - veteran volunteers will adapt more easily to the changing needs of the NCF (ex. FreePlan) - an effective training program will attract more volunteers - the NCF may consider the implementation of various projects/services given an effective and versatile internal training mechanism James Wilkinson da957
