Mike Kelly - Candidate

I'm a long-time Ottawa resident with hi-tech sector experience that started at Bell-Northern Research. In the mid-1990's, I co-founded 'DataBeacon', a data analysis software product company, and served as a board member on its board of directors, and as chief technology officer. DataBeacon grew to over 100 employees and was acquired by Cognos, a business intelligence company, where I served as lead architect for their performance management product suite. Last year, I founded Xarkin, a start-up working in the area of robotics. I've been an NCF member since 2007, an NCF board member since 2010, and am an avid runner.

I've got a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with Computer Science, both from the University of Waterloo.

What skills will you contribute to the NCF Board?

Having been a board member at Databeacon for 10 years, I bring knowledge of the operations and responsibilities of a small organization board to NCF. As an entrepreneur, I bring my experience and enthusiasm for growth, progress and quality to the NCF board.

What do you think are the most important functions of NCF for its members?

As I see it, NCF has two primary functions: One, NCF should provide top quality Internet connectivity at competitive prices. Its principle of not-for-profit operation ensures that every dollar of revenue is put toward maximizing the value provided to members. And two, NCF should provide services around connectivity that make the Internet truly accessible. The help available at the local office, and the information available on the NCF website are examples of this.

Why do you want to be an NCF Director?

I would like to see NCF become increasingly influential as a service provider in Ottawa. Its operation, free from the pressures and influences upon commercial operations, are a benefit to our community. My hope is that the skills and experience I bring will be a useful complement to those of the other board members to help NCF progress along this path in the coming years.

Je suis un résident de longue date d'Ottawa, ayant de l'expérience dans le secteur de la haute-technologie, qui a débuté à Bell-Northern Research.
