============================================== Candidate: Chris Hawley ============================================== About Chris Hawley ---------------------------- Personal Statistics ------------------- Name: Chris Hawley Address: ah654@freenet.carleton.ca Age: 27 Divorced, no children, no pets, 2 plants, 2 computers, 1 mountain bike I was born in Parma, Ohio, USA. I followed my parents as we moved several times during my childhood, from Ohio to Michigan to Colorado to Utah and back to Ohio. As an adult I have moved a couple times within Ohio and 1.5 years ago (August 1993), I moved here. Yes, I am American by birth and miss my mommy. I am all but approved for Landed Immigrant status, which I have reason to believe will be settled within the week, in my favour. I currently work and live in Kanata, and plan on staying here permanently. My interests include Nature, Mountain Biking, Computers, the Internet, Free-Net(s), Music, and my work. EDUCATION --------- High School Vocational training in Data Processing Management Self-taught computer geek and Free-Net lover Personal and/or professional courses successfully completed: Solaris 1.x Advanced System Administration SA-370 Sun Microsystems, Inc. (1 week) Solaris 2.x System Administration II SA-285 Sun Microsystems, Inc. (1 week) Internet Security Firewalls D. Brent Chapman, Great Circle Associates (1 day) Time Management Severn Time Management Systems, Inc. (1 day) ClearCase Administration and Planning Atria Software, Inc. (1 week) WORK ---- I work at Newbridge Networks here in Kanata as a Design Support Specialist, which is basically a system admin and help desk rolled into one person which specializes in the needs of one Research and Development group. As of next week, 60% of my time (previously 40%) will be spent in the Corporate IT Computer Operations group, which is the corporate MIS group at Newbridge (where all the 'regular' UNIX and other guru's work). While here I perform as a general System Administrator, but assigned work on a project basis rather than doing end user support tasks. The remaining part of my professional life is devoted to an R & D group called VIVID, as a Design Support Specialist. In VIVID, I personally attend to about 100 Sun SPARCstations, 15 PC's, 60 Macintoshes, and a handful of other machines that include HP and SGI workstations, Xyplex terminal servers, Alantec and Newbridge and Allied Telesis bridges and repeaters, and a router or two (Cisco, Wellfleet). Thank God I have some support people to call on to help with some of this stuff! In the corporate IS group, I am one of a small group of UNIX sysadmins and gurus and geeks. My current responsibilities are designing a new method of distributing software to all Newbridge campuses around the world: including operating system stuff, applications, and other network resources (such as RFCs, other research documents, NIS maps, etc). Also, I am redesigning our internal backup setup so that we can continue to scale with the explosive growth we are experiencing. FREE-NET -------- On the National Capital Free-Net, I volunteer in the following ways: o Linux SIG operator o IRC "maintainer" and Operator o Hardware/Software Committee, specifically in regards to: o the NCF Database Project, which relates to my interest in o the NCF Fundraising committee I am most active in the Database, IRC, and Linux stuff, and somewhat less active in the Fundraising and Hardware/Software committees except as they relate to the database project. I love FreeNet! More on that in another document, I think. FUN --- I like to spend time with a certain lovely lady, ride my mountain bike in the summer, play pool or darts with my friends, and I've spent a few hours playing Doom as well. :) FUN - COMPUTER -------------- I own two PC's, one of which I have lent to a friend here in Ottawa for an indefinite period of time. The one I have at home is an IBM Clone made by Insight. It is based on an Intel 486 processor running at 33 Mhz. It has 8MB of RAM, a 14" SVGA monitor, 210MB of IDE hard drive space, and 1.2GB of SCSI hard drive space. In addition, it is configured with 1.2 and 1.44MB floppy drives, a 250MB Tape backup unit, a CD-ROM player (2x), Sound Blaster Pro soundcard, and a borrowed QIC-150 SCSI tape drive. It has a Novation 2400 baud external modem, and a US Robotics Dual Standard 14.4k/9600 baud modem attached via serial ports as well. The other PC is a 386-33sx, with SVGA and 40MB IDE, Sound Blaster, etc. On my PC I run Linux (of course) as well as MS-DOS/Windows 3.11. I enjoy having UNIX on my 486, I find it quite powerful and educational. I keep DOS and Windows on there for games and checking out new software for DOS/Windows. I should mention that at the office I have access to many Sun computers and other hardware. On my desk at work I have a SPARCstation 5 with a 21" color monitor, 48MB of RAM, an internal CD-ROM drive (2x), and just over 3.5GB of hard disk storage. In my second cubicle I have 2 more Sparc 5's and a Sparc 2. I also have access to many high-end Sparc 20's, Pentium and 486-based PC's, Macintoshes (including the Power Mac on my desk) and a whole range of other Sun machines from IPC's like the one on Dave Sutherland's desk, to IPX's like freenet-news, Sparc 1's, 1+'s, 2's, and 10's like the freenet and freenet3 computers. We also have at least one SparcCenter 2000 here and a Sparc 1000 as well. So at work, my love of computing power is well-fed and always learning and growing. (End of personal stuff) Roles and Responsibilities * Please email me (#7) if ---------------------------- >What do you see as your role as a board member within the organization >Natioanl Capital FreeNet and what do you see as your responsibilities?? Sorry so late in responding Kyla -- I've been out of the country! [ After writing this, I have come back to edit in this note: I am posting this to my Candidate's information area onder the "go agm" menu. - cch ] I'll not use the word "should" in this. I'm also not going to say what "a Board Member" is, or "should be". I'm going to make this short and sweet, and Real, and Me. MY role as a Director --------------------- o I WILL BRING technical skills, a fairly vast knowledge base of UNIX, computers, networking, and the Internet, to the Board. o I, CHRIS HAWLEY, PLEDGE TO USE all my skills, contacts and knowledge to further the strength, growth and usefulness of the FreeNet. o I WILL BE a huge obstacle to those motions that may seem politically correct but are indeed physically or technically impossible. o I WILL also BRING my sense of humour and energy to the Board. o I, CHRIS HAWLEY, PROMISE TO BE accessible to all of the Membership. o I WILL NEVER vote for mandatory user fees. MY responsibilities ------------------- I take full responsibility for meeting all the above requirements. I will take on the additional responsibilities that I see as I serve in my function as Director that I feel I can handle effectively. I will make it my personal responsibility to do everything I can to make this FreeNet the best it can be. Things in the Future there is something ---------------------------- A COUPLE GOALS -------------- short-term: I want to see us strengthen our FreeNet from within before we stack ourselves up even higher. Before we reach out to new and potentially dangerous methods of funding, let us more efficiently and sensibly apply the ones we have already. I expect the Database project to enable us to streamline our fundraising efforts; allow us to thank those who should be thanked, and ask those who should be asked; and allow us to track each donation to a level of detail not currently possible. longer-term: I hope to see FreeNet move into a client-server model, where we all have the 'sexy' access we crave, while at the same time, offloading a significant part of that work to the client machine at the receiver's end of the modem connection. Mandatory User Fees ---------------------------- # # #### Mandatory User Fees? ## # # # # # # # # My simple answer. # # # # # # ## # # # # #### ### # # ## # # ### # # # # # # ### # # # # # # # ## # ###### # ## ## # # # ### # # # # # ### Time Limits ---------------------------- TIME LIMITS ----------- I hate Time Limits. I hate Unresponsive Machines. I hate Busy Signals. I hate User Fees. What we need is a way to get rid of ALL of these undesirable things. In the meantime, I see time limits as the best way to handle a hard-to-handle situation. I would have pushed for a different implementation than the Board voted in, and indeed, should I be elected and the issue ever arise and I was asked to rehash this again, I would propose some changes in how we implement the time limits (assuming we still have to at that time). Two changes I would have pushed for would be a "sliding window" effect, where you would have 14 hours per week, where the week would be the last 7 days, and would "slide" along with you based upon today's date. These changes (The sliding window, and 14 hours per week as opposed to 2 per day) would, in my opinion, make the limits much more bearable. I would rather see another solution and will work to find and implement a better fix than time limits. However... Without any better ideas, we will be forced to live with time limits for the immediate future, it seems. In my opinion, if I have a way to let on 500 more people per day which will only impact 6% of the membership at all, and only a percentage of them in any significant manner, it sounds like an attractive idea. But when my fello NCF'ers can't get their Thing done, I feel the need to find a better way. 'Nuff Said. Miscellaneous ---------------------------- Miscellaneous beliefs and positions ----------------------------------- I support recorded votes on each vote the Board makes. - Accountability! I believe the Board and it's members should be very easy to get in touch with as a typical member. - Accessibility! I will be "The Little Guy's Director", and will listen to all who ask me to take up their cause. - Dependability! I will attend every Board meeting that I physically can. - Reliability! More to be added here as I can... Send private comments via email message to Chris Hawley (ah654) ----------------------------
