============================================== Candidate: Daniel C. Gallant ============================================== About Daniel C. Gallant (long as usual) ---------------------------- So you want to know about Daniel C. Gallant eh? Okay here goes ... (As usual, it's long, you know how verbose I am) I'm the biggest FreeNet zealot in the world. There is no one that sells FreeNet more than I do. When I was attending the Adult High School in '93, they called me Mr. FreeNet because I got so many students to register here on FreeNet. There was even some nice office volunteer that drew a picture of some guy (me?!?!?!) with a pack sack full of registration forms falling out all over the place ... it was very touching to know that is how I was seen by my fellow office volunteers. I'm also noted to have the record for the longest time spent on FreeNet continuously, (30 hours straight) One session never ended before another one began. When I got my 5 min warning, I started another telnet session, (I could do that because I was in a 24 hour lab at Carleton) On more than one occasion, I also have spent the night at the FreeNet office processing registration forms, but sadly, they won't let me stay over night any more. I'm hoping that if I'm elected to the board that I'll be trusted enough to be left there overnight. After all I've been an office volunteer for 18 months ... more than any staff member. I'm very compulsive about the registrations too, it has to be done just so for me ... and it's not my idea either ... it was David Petite's (aj086) system (the former registrar) He had devised a prefect system, but it's not adhered to by all the volunteers and that makes for delays in registrations. But that's another story ... more about me ... I'm a 44 year old man, that's trying to get off social assistance by showing people how to use FreeNet/Internet. The only reason that I know what I know about the Internet is because of what I've learned on FreeNet or on other nets that I've been able to login to because of FreeNet. This has been the BEST education I've ever had. I've met people from all parts of the world. I've given long distance instructions on how to use the Internet, to a teacher that lives in Naples Florida, she's bought me a FreeNet t-shirt to say thanks, and we've become the best of friends. The possibilities are amazing. I've met some of the nicest *people* in the world here, but of course I've met some of the biggest assholes in the world here too. That's what I LOVE about the net. It's so much like society ... only it's more digital :-) I'm also working on other things that will make FreeNet a better place. I hope to find someone that is also on welfare that will help me do what I'd like to do here. (See What I showed Mac Harb) We will train people for free, (funded by tax deductable donations) and support a FreeNet public access site that will have at least 20 vt320s and will also be opened 24 hours a day to serve the public better. *bigger smile* If I were on the board, I'd be able to represent the users who see FreeNet as a member of an international community here in cyberspace. Not just a local community that caters to the local mentality. Instead I see FreeNet as offering *more* services and have the people that can afford it pay for the people that can't. This is how a real community should be. I believe in the freedom of information and the use of the Internet to make tomorrow's society a better place to experience ... we can only learn from a joint effort to free the net access to Canadians from coast to coast. If we expect Canadians to have a place in the knowledge based society that will be there in the 21st century, we have to start to train EVERYONE how to use it. There has been enough examples of the haves and the have nots in the world, we have to work as a team to make FreeNet a bigger and better place to visit. Thanks Lets see a slogan should go here: Freenet For All - Vote Gallant. Thanks John for the slogan Dan Gallant (v-mail on Bell.Net 1.613.567.8001 ask your questions here too.) office volunteer National Capital FreeNet Ottawa Canada af891@freenet.carleton.ca or gallant@eskimo.com finger me, I love it when you do ... aka Mr. Politically Incorrect AGM general discussion (ncf.agm95.general) >>> ---------------------------- Candidate Forum (ncf.agm95.candidate-forum) >>> ---------------------------- Funding ideas... *newbies* please read ---------------------------- Points of view... "..." as meaning a menu ---------------------------- What I think FreeNet means ---------------------------- The real idea behind FreeNets, and Free-Nets I think should be to FREE THE NET!! Who owns the bandwidth that we buy anyway? Where did they get it from? How did they create it? Can we the people do it for less then we are paying them for it? If mankind is to make it through the next thousand years we will all have to know that education should be a God given right of society to society. If we want to have the responsibility for our future, we have to have some control in how we get there. Anyone that uses the net knows the power that one gets there. It's said that knowledge is power, well the Internet is the next place that this knowledge revolution will take place. I guess what I'm proposing is far more radical than anyone else. Here goes ... I want to see a FreeNet in ever municipality, from coast to coast. I know that I see amazing things everyday on FreeNet, and I'm constantly in awe of what is here. Every community should support the FreeNet too. As time goes by and more people get involved in volunteering for FreeNet, we will all see amazing things, but that's another menu of items ... :-) I also think that every Canadian should have access to information via fiber optics, and this can only be fairly implemented if it is carried out as a public utility. Much like hydro, only much more user friendly. I mean that in more ways than one too. This is my hidden agenda, only I just wanted to let you know that from the start. As I train the people in my @welfare.net to use the net, and see them become more empowered, I know that they will see the power that would give the poor. To have control like never before. But I'm sure that I'm scaring some of you out of your witts. :-) If we start with a common goal and a shared interest in creating a true digital democracy. I know that the control freaks out there don't like the possibility of a fiber optics network owned by the people. It will give them to much power. There is a project now underway that I'm registered in, called Virtual College and I'm posting the information on it for your pleasure and participation ... This is the first steps towards a digital democracy ... Thank you Lets see a slogan should go here: Freenet For All - Vote Gallant. Using the form of a college, we address specific problems that list members post from their community. Your community can be your residential neighborhood, your college campus, your workplace or any community you identify strongly with. At VC you can participate as a student, a professor or even as a member of the Board of Trustees. You can share knowledge and skills that you developed in trying to resolve a problem in your community, or you can enlist the aid of dozens of people who have already faced similar problems. At present, VC is American urban-centric, but with members in Canada, Scotland, Kenya, France, Finland, South Africa, Australia and Italy, we we are moving towards becoming a more representative, more diverse body. Participants will earn credits towards a: BS (Better Self-Government), MS (More Self-Government) or PHD (Proponent of Hands-on Democracy). Transcripts will be issued at the end of each semester and list members can assist in creating a school library (digests of our problem solving) and an alumni association (file of resource people and groups). I was told that I was one of the first 100 registered. As I've said in the past, I can see trends and this FreeNet is going to be one of the biggest trend into the 21st century. Lets see a slogan should go here: Freenet For All - Vote Gallant. Thanks John for the slogan Dan Gallant (v-mail on Bell.Net 1.613.567.8001 ask your questions here too.) office volunteer National Capital FreeNet Ottawa Canada af891@freenet.carleton.ca or gallant@eskimo.com finger me, I love it when you do ... aka Mr. Politically Incorrect What I showed Mac Harb ---------------------------- The following is a copy of the document that I gave Mac Harb on Friday. He told me that he liked the idea, and that he was going to come on FreeNet in the next couple of weeks. I know that it's a good idea too. I'm just hoping that you think so too. As you probably know, more information will be posted as time goes by. ---------- Daniel C. Gallant B1- 519 Gilmour St. Ottawa, On K1S 5R3 (613) 567-8001 I'm a FreeNet specialist, and I know that I have a skill that many people want. I am willing to teach someone else that's on welfare these same skills. Then as an assistance to the development of a true net literacy here in Canada, I want to expose the street people and the homeless to the Internet. This will also fall within the public access domain. (I'm evolved with the FreeNet public access committee) Later on, I envision a store front FreeNet dropin center that will be run by volunteers and others on welfare. Eventually, I am hoping that the public will be educated enough to start FreeNet user's groups around the National Capital area. I think that they should either be in local libraries, or community centres. I also want to get all the MP'S (starting with you) on FreeNet too. I want Canada to end up being a leader in the knowledge based society that's coming. This is one of the best ways to see that goal achieved. FreeNet is a grass roots organization that is going to get bigger and bigger with every passing month. We must be prepared to deal with this increase in membership. The registrations are coming in now at over 100 per day constantly. FreeNet is one of the most robust Free-Nets in the world. I'm hoping that you can see the potential that one has here on FreeNet. We are becoming citizens of the world, not just of Canada. More and more, you see organizations, and the members of these organizations with e-mail addresses. I want to see everyone that wants an e-mail address to have one, and have it for FREE. There are some that can afford to give money, some that can afford to give time and even some that give both time and money to FreeNet. For this to happen, there is a shared view of how powerful and useful that this medium is. The idea that I have should be able to take 2 people off welfare within a year. More should be able to follow as the vision becomes more clear. ---------- This is VERY important VIRTUAL COLLEGE ---------------------------- The following information tells about a new project Virtual College is the first steps towards a digital democracy.
