============================================== Candidate: Dave Sutherland ============================================== About Dave Sutherland ---------------------------- David Sutherland is Director of Computing and Communications Services at Carleton University in Ottawa, a position he has held since 1983. The department is responsible for the central computing facilities on campus, administrative and academic applications development and support, the campus-wide data neworks and the campus telephone system. David Sutherland headed the organizing committee for the National Capital FreeNet. He currently holds the positions of Chairman of the Board of Directors and acting President. Mr. Sutherland is also on the Boards of ONet Networking (the major Ontario Internet provider) and Telecommunities Canada (the national community computing systems organization). He is a member of the Advisory Council for the Information Highway, a federal committee appointed to advise the Minister of Industry, John Manley. He is the co-chair of the Access and Social Impacts Working Group, one of 5 sub-committess of the Council. Activities ---------------------------- I have been involved with the following NCF-related activities: o chair of the original organizing committee formed at Carleton University in October 1991. o is a signatory to the original Letters Patent o chaired many public meetings promoting the developemnt of the project from October 1991 until its launch in February 1992. o part of the group that obtained the original funding for the project. - negotiated a $10,000 start-up grant from Industry Canada - negotiated a Sun SparcStation and its subsequent upgrade from Sun Microsystems (freenet1) as well as an additional system (freenet5). - wrote the Ontario Network Infrastructure Program grant submission that is providing $140,000 in support over 3 years. - obtained the original 24 2400 baud modems from Gandalf o represents the NCF on the board of Telecommunities Canada and ONET as well as the Information Highway Advisory Council o chaired the 1993 and 1994 Canadian Freenet conferences. o chairman of the NCF board and president from 1992 to date. Positions ---------------------------- I believe the NCF should be: o free to use in order to provide access to the broadest possible segment of our community. o a significant contributor to the quality of life in the Ottawa-Carletion region. Education and computer literacy are important goals for the NCF. In addition, it provides both an important information resource and a meeting ground for members of our community. o accessible to as many people as possible. This means additional access points in public places and a close examination of services to ensure that the needs of the majority are met. o structured to meet the needs of the majority of users. This may mean that we cannot continue to offer the range of services now used by a minority of the community. Priorities ---------------------------- The priorities for the NCF are: o responsible stewardship to ensure continued viability. o fundraising. We must seek new sources of funds as well as develop programs to encourage members to provide continuing support. o development of more efficient software to provide improved service from the limited resources. Examples include offline mail and newsgroup readers. o expansion of the public access facilities. o expansion of the services provided to the Francophone community.
