Churchill River Saskatchewan canoe trip: August 23, 2011

Day 3, Tuesday, August 23

We quickly put as many items as possible under the tarp before breakfast. The drizzle was on and off, so we were able to cook our pancakes, adding fresh blueberries and cranberries from our site. Our breakfasts all started with Neocitran as we both had coughs. This perked us up for our coffee – we used Starbucks instant coffee on this trip and have decided it is quite drinkable – and it saves carrying and cleaning a coffee perc.

On the water, it rained heavily, so our rain gear was put to good use. Bill caught a pike… We had a directional challenge as the Churchill is a mass of islands, but we finally found our way through and stopped for lunch on an island. We then paddled to a peninsula with pictographs. Eagle eye Bill spotted a pictograph of a figure.

In the afternoon, we were able to paddle quite close to a large rock in the river covered with pelicans and a few cormorants and gulls.

We found a beautiful campsite near the Four Portage trail. While Bill was cooking, Barbara spotted an eagle perched on a rock very close to our site. We both jumped up for our cameras, startling him… so off he flew.
