To be sure, the clan is different things to different people. Well, there's no accounting for that! What we can tell you, is that our family was without a clan structure for some four hundred years, and that it was recently reestablished through the vision and effort of the Ballyholland McAteers, and that it is now recognized as a "Clan of Ireland" by the Irish government.
We have a Goban Saoir (or head of clan), but today he or she is elected, for a term lasting from one World Gathering to the next, if his or her strength holds out. If not, there is a by-election.
The Goban Saoir is the temporal leader of the clan, and serves on the Clan Committee, which may be chaired by someone other than the Goban Saoir. Clan Committee members are selected by the Goban Saoir from those who volunteer to serve on the committee.
All clan activities are run by the Clan Committee, which does a great deal of
work in bringing about World Gatherings, sporting events, social evenings,
school exchanges, and so on. Nominations for Goban Saoir are made within
the Clan Committee, which then votes on the matter. Committee members are
usually residents of Ireland, but are not necessarily so.

Registration is now handled separately in each country. We just found it to be more practical. The Clan Committee sends out notices, and invitations to various events, but they do so through your local registrar or national "Clan Mhac" organization. Look up the registrar for your region in the list below, and send that person an e-mail or a letter, or phone them. If they don't have your address, they can't reach you!
Many national "Clan Mhac" organizations just use the names and addresses from local telephone directories, because it is much easier than trying to maintain a private address list. We do this at the website, and we send letters by regular post because we have found it works better than e-mail. If you are listed as a McAteer in the phone directory, we will probably reach you.
People with surnames other than McAteer should contact their regional registrar
and ask to be put on the mailing list. Note that it is up to you to make
sure your address is up to date. May we meet in Ballyholland!
