The purpose of the training is three fold:
1) to review basic safety equipment and
procedures necessary for whitewater canoeing.
2) to learn and review flat water canoeing
for novice and rusty canoeists.
3) to introduce/review basic white water paddle strokes and maneuvers.
With basic skills at least initiated, participants in WW1
and WW2 should be better prepared and progress faster - thereby getting more
enjoyment / thrills and
whitewater experience from the WW1 and WW2 courses.
Some equipment (canoes, paddles and PFD’s (not many large
sizes) will be available but bring your own if you possibly can. Flat water canoes are acceptable for this
training but not for WW1 and WW2. As per
Coast Guard Requirements canoes must be equipped with signaling device
(whistle), painters, bailer and heaving line.
Be sure to dress for the weather (rain, cold, sun,
We sure don’t want anyone to fall in the water, but if it
happens, you must change to dry, warm clothes quickly. Coaches will
direct involuntary swimmers to hold onto their stern or throwbag
and get pulled
to shore. It is very important NOT
to panic; you will be rescued in minutes.
