John Called the meeting to order

Notification of Youth Opportunity – Susan Wright (Youth and Policing)

Recruiting for YIPI (Youth In Policing Initiative): Kids (14-17) hired $10.70 an hour through the Ottawa police - 4 days in office, 1 day in the community.  Application deadline is Feb 18.  For details: http://www.ottawapolice.ca/en/community/teenlounge/YIPI.aspx

Past Activities

Ottawa 67ths game  -  Sunday Jan 23  -  John Stalker

Over 500 youth, adults and family attended - a number of non-perishable food items were collected, not a lot but enough to make a good trial for the public for next year.  Special thanks to Phil Edens and his venturers for collecting the food and manning the scout info table.

Upcoming Events

Winter Mountaineering Adventure  -  4 Weekends in February  -  Allan Yates

We have 192 people who have signed up - every group that has wanted to go is able to go.  Every group must get their own Tour Permits - though we are looking into an overall permit for next year.  The snowshoes are being stored down there as Christiaan does not have enough room for 56 pairs of snowshoes every weekend.  Both hostel locations have sent us thanks for how good the youth were when they were down and how clean they have left the rooms in the past.  There are two lists available on the VAF website on how to dress for the weather that might be expected.  Trip leaders will have maps of the area and trails if they are needed.

Whitewater Weekends  -  May/June 2011  -  Bill Bowman

Registration has now opened for the following WhiteWater courses

WhiteWater1 Canoe  -  May 27-29  On the Petawawa river

WhiteWater3 Canoe  -  May 27-29  On the Petawawa river

WhiteWater2 Canoe  -  Jun 3-5  On the Madawaska river

WhiteWater1 Kayak  -  Jun 3-5  On the Madawaska river

WhiteWater2 Kayak  -  Jun 3-5  On the Madawaska river

Mini WhiteWater1 Canoe  -  Jun 3-5  On the Madawaska river

(Refer to the VAF website for details – address at end of these notes)

Need volunteers to coordinate each of the 6 courses (must be an attendee of the course).  Also need a volunteer for the shuttle.

There are 7 Whitewater canoes at OPE confirmed available but you must provide transportation for them - $40 per canoe, and they are first come first served.

There will be a pre-training course for WW1 (mandatory to take WW1) - May1  (WW2 needs WW1; Kayak1 needs WW1; Kayak2 needs Kayak1; WW3 needs WW2 and WW1)

Laserquest2  -  March 5-6 2011  -  RARC Mike Harris

Set date - Mar5 10pm - $40.00 per participant.  All booked up.

OPE Work Weekend – April 29-May 1 – Tim Taylor

Is happening and it will be similar format to years past.  Check the VAF website for details.

Apple Hill Work Weekend – May 7-8 – John Stalker

Contact John Dougherty DCC-program@voyageur.scouts.ca if interested.

Scout/Guide week flag raising, Ottawa City Hall – Feb 19 – John Stalker

Please come out to raise the scouting and guiding flags at City Hall to promote scouting/guiding in Canada.  Event starts at 11am sharp, please arrive 15-20 minutes early to allow time to get organized.  Refreshments will be served after.  Stay after for Winterlude.

Reports

Joint Council  -  Jake and Brina

January event - Went to the Museum of Science and Technology Jan 23.  18 people showed up.  Please RSVP so we can plan things better.  It was fun to push buttons for 2-3 hours

Winter Camp - February 11-13 - at Mackie house in Crystal Beach.  The fact that we are doing it in the city does not mean that youth can leave at anytime, this is still a camp.  $40.00 + lots of food for 1 breakfast you will be hosting.  The theme is Dr. Seuss.  Registration closed at the February VAF meeting (Tuesday Feb 1).  Skating rink available – bring your skates if interested.

March event will be planned over the coming month.  Will post on JC site when details are available.

There were only 75 people upstairs tonight, 75% in uniform.  JC is a uniform event meeting - please encourage your youth to wear one.

Training and Development

Woodbadge2 - Feb 25-27, Mar 25-27  -  Mark Milan / Alex Gazaleh

Company WB2 is the largest registered – Other sections (Beavers and Cubs) may or may not run.

Outdoor skills - April 16-17

requirements for the outdoor skills class will be assessed in the first two weekends.  If someone already has a troop WB2 then they are likely not going to have to take this one.

WB1 Senior Sections will be available online starting in the fall.

Wilderness 1st Responder - Jan 7-9  -  Doug Proud

Went well, 9 more people are now registered Wilderness 1st responder (7 youth).

WFR Recertification - $160+HST, March 5-6, location TBD

SYRP – Senior Youth Recruitment Presentations – Chris Majka

Goal is to teach youth to make presentations to large groups.  Combines FOCUS and Toastmasters.  Free of charge. April 2nd 1-5pm.  Registration deadline is March 21.

Other Business

RoVent 2011 Committee – 2nd Tuesday of every month – Doug MacKinnon

First meeting Tuesday Feb 8.  Come on out to help plan this event  – all positions available.

VAF Chair nominations  -  John Stalker

No response yet.  We are looking for a new VAF Chair by the end of this year.  Please nominate someone.  The requirements/demands of the job are not that onerous.  Please contact John.

Venturer Company membership exclusion  -  Mike Jowett

There was a good meeting with many occupational groups in attendance.  It does not look like there will be a great change in our current policy.  Mike promises to make a presentation on the end results of the committee.   While this will not be the final word nation-wide, Voyageur Council does have the largest Senior Section presence of any council so our voice carries a lot of weight.

Presentation on the Riviere Coulonge Whitewater Trip – Bill Bowman

Beginner whitewater trip north of Fort Coulounge.

3 day trip,  river on crown land (no fees)

Is this trip for you? If you are a good flat-water canoe tripper then WW2 training is suggested and a River Rescue course. On the actual trip the SPOT GPS tracker/emergency locator is always recommended since the river is in remote country.

Next Meeting: Tuesday March 1, 2011 at 7:30 pm
