Note: For configuring other newsreaders, such as Netscape, it is best to use the search tool on your personalized StartPage to search the internet or the manufacturer of the software for configuration information. Make sure the information applies to your software and its version number.
Microsoft's Outlook Express is a free email and newsgroup reader included with Microsoft Internet Explorer and downloadable from Microsoft. If you've already configured Outlook Express for email, the following few steps will configure Outlook Express to read NCF newsgroups.
Open Outlook Express. From the Tools menu, select Accounts. Select the News tab. If news.ncf.ca (or 'news.ncf.carleton.ca') is listed in the display, skip to step 3.
Click the Add button and add News. Follow the instructions on the series of forms that appear. In the form that asks for 'News (NNTP) server', enter news.ncf.ca and check the box that says 'My news server requires me to log on'. On the next form, enter your NCF account ID (eg., ab123) and your NCF password. Don't check the SPA checkbox. Click finish. Outlook Express will list the newsgroups available at NCF. You can look at some now, or at some later time. You're done! Skip step 3.
If news.ncf.ca (or 'news.ncf.carleton.ca') is already listed as an account, select it and then press Properties. In the form that opens, select the Server tab. Make sure 'My news server requires me to log on'; is checked, and that your NCF account and password are entered. "Remember password" eliminates having to enter a password each time you access a newsgroup.
To test the configuration, you can click here, which should open the NCF announcement newsgroup.
