DSL Troubleshooting

Common causes of trouble:

Connecting the modem

Plug one end of the telephone cord that came with the modem directly into the wall jack nearest to the computer and the other end into the DSL plug at the back of the modem. (Do not use an extension cord or a filter on this line.)

Plug a telephone filter into ALL telephone jacks throughout the house where there is a device attached (e.g., telephone, answering machine, fax), except the DSL modem. Failing to do so will cause a lot of disturbance on your phone line and may result in your modem not working properly.

Connect the power supply to the back of the modem and to an electrical outlet.

Turn on the modem, using the on/off button at the back. Wait until the lights stop flashing and are solidly green (this may take a few minutes).

Plug one end of the yellow Ethernet cable into the port at the back of the modem and the other end into your computer. When the DSL light is solid green, you are ready to browse the Internet!

Note: If the modem was purchased from NCF, Do not use the Setup CD provided with the modem, because it has been preconfigured.

Authentication

Username must be of the form ab123@ncf.ca, not just your accountID.

Password is your NCF DSL password, not your NCF dialup/email password.

Dial-up connection

When opening Internet Explorer or Outlook Express, if you see a prompt for a dialup connection:

  1. Open the Control Panel and select Internet Options
  2. Click the Connections tab
  3. Select the option "Never dial a connection"
